Pulse Propagation in Discrete Systems of Coupled Excitable Cells

چکیده
Propagation of pulses in myelinated fibers may be described by appropriate solutions of spatially discrete FitzHugh-Nagumo systems. In these systems, propagation failure may occur if either the coupling between nodes is not strong enough or the recovery is too fast. We give an asymptotic construction of pulses for spatially discrete FitzHugh-Nagumo systems which agrees well with numerical simulations and discuss evolution of initial data into pulses and pulse generation at a boundary. Formulas for the speed and length of pulses are also obtained.

Wave propagation along interacting fiber-like lattices
A fiber-like lattice with resistively coupled electronic elements mimicking a 1-D discrete reactiondiffusion system is considered. The chosen unit or element in the fiber is the paradigmatic Chua’s circuit, capable of exhibiting bistable, excitable, oscillatory or chaotic behavior. Then the dynamics of a structure of two such interacting parallel active fibers is studied. Suitable conditions fo...
متن کاملCriteria for the Convergence, Oscillation, and Bistability of Pulse Circulation in a Ring of Excitable Media
A discrete model based on a nonlinear difference equation (equivalent to a coupled map lattice of high dimension) is used to study the dynamics of a circulating pulse in a ring of excitable media, such as cardiac cells. Based on the global and local properties of monotonic restitution and dispersion curves, criteria are obtained for the asymptotic stability of the unique steady state (pulse cir...
متن کاملWave trains, self-oscillations and synchronization in discrete media
We study wave propagation in networks of coupled cells which can behave as excitable or self-oscillatory media. For excitable media, an asymptotic construction of wave trains is presented. This construction predicts their shape and speed, as well as the critical coupling and the critical separation of time scales for propagation failure. It describes stable wave train generation by repeated fir...
متن کاملExcitable front geometry in reaction-diffusion systems with anomalous dispersion.
Two-dimensional excitable systems with anomalous dispersion provide a discrete set of interpulse distances for the stable propagation of planar wave trains. Numerical simulations show that the trailing front of a pulse pair can undergo transitions between these stable distances. In response to localized perturbations, the trailing front converges towards one of numerous, sigmoidal shapes. Their...
متن کاملSimulation of action potential propagation in an inhomogeneous sheet of coupled excitable cells.
Cable theory and active equivalent circuits have been used to simulate the propagation of action potentials along a single nerve or muscle fiber by representing the cell as a unidimensional cable composed of isopotential segments. We extended this method to a two-dimensional sheet of cells which in many ways represents the atrium. Our method consisted of solving for the potential profile of a s...
